Upgrading IVAR

Upgrading IVAR

Fall 2018

The task was to take a standard IKEA IVAR chair and imagine it into anything we wanted. Although this project was in September, winter was fast approaching and I was already spending long hours in my tiny New York apartment. I wanted the chair to be an injection of spring to brighten any bleak day.

I used fake flowers because they’ll last and used hot glue to apply them to the chair. I tried to use as much of the flower as possible, cutting up petals and dissembling the vines. Since it was September all of the fake flowers were fall themed, it was necessary to paint and recolor many of the flowers to add more pink. While I originally was only going to only have flowers, the vines really added structure and added a flow to the piece. I also stained the bottom of the legs to make it feel like it had just come from the dirt.

The final piece of the assignment was to create an IKEA-like manual so that someone could recreate it.

The professor had intended for the exercise to be a lesson on fabrication but since my idea was on the simpler side this became more of a modeling and lighting exercise for me. While I no longer have the chair, I wish that I could’ve added more flowers and more volume.
